Pipe Fitting Challenge (DVGW / rbv)

They are the surgeons of the construction industry. The water flows through the underground pipes as if through veins.

The German Association of Piping Companies (rbv) and the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) will be demonstrating the enormous capacity of the water network in all its facets—in the Pipe Fitting Challenge in the atrium of the West Entrance. On the IFAT Munich stage, different teams will compete in constructing complex pipe systems.

The competition is aimed at attracting young talents, because even in this highly specialized industry, competent junior staff is needed due to the shortage of skilled workers. The idea behind the Pipe Fitting Challenge is as reasonable as it is obvious: the sporting competition offers participants and visitors insights into the varied and interesting professions in pipeline construction. It clearly shows how attractive the job profiles and how exciting the activities in pipe fitting are. This field of activity is a promising alternative and a future-proof choice with excellent development options for every young person choosing a career.

The challenge

Teams from pipeline construction companies, training centers, utilities and network operators from Germany and abroad will compete in their profession: prospective specialists as well as skilled workers in the pipe construction industry—no longer in the profession than ten years—will present their skills to a wide audience.

In a practical way, the challenge demonstrates how technical expertise, modern materials and innovative piping techniques intertwine on a pipeline construction site.

The tasks of the Pipe Fitting Challenge

Spotlight on practical relevance: the task will be to build a water distribution system from cast iron and PE pipes and to fit a repair clamp with a flange connection on a pipe system. The performance of the teams with three members each will be examined by skilled and independent referees, focusing on the timely and qualitative implementation. This is where fun, professionalism and the fascinating world of pipe network construction come together.

In the pipeline: the film on the industry.

Impressive pictures! The film shows the output volume of the industry as well as the tasks of specialists in the pipe construction sector. A film that effectively turns the spotlight on the professionals in the industry.

rbv’s film emphatically acknowledges the industry’s importance for modern society. It deals with the “pipeline infrastructure as cultural asset” and shows the demanding career paths and training opportunities. The demands on employees involved in the construction of pipelines and sewers for electricity, water, oil, district heating or telecommunications facilities are becoming increasingly diverse. High-tech has long since found its way onto construction sites: state-of-the-art processes and machines are part of the daily routine. This requires extensive know-how, technical understanding, but also team spirit. Those working in pipeline construction are the guardians of our society’s lifelines that transport diverse media such as energy, gas, water, sewage or information.
