“Rethink—reduce—recycle plastic”—this was the motto of the opening of the world's leading trade fair IFAT at the forum water / sewage (Hall B2).

It is clear that many different actions and actors are needed to stop the pollution of oceans and inland waters by plastic and to initiate a trend reversal.

On May 14, 2018 IFAT brought the most important actors from politics, research and industry onto the stage. The world’s leading trade fair for environmental technology was opened in the forum water / sewage in Hall B2 by

  • Svenja Schulze, German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

and

  • Dr. Marcel Huber, MdL, Bavarian State Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection.

The opening was followed by a high-level panel discussion entitled “Rethink—reduce—recycle plastic: innovative solutions to protect our rivers and oceans”. How can we manage the (micro) plastic quantities in oceans and rivers? Which medium and long-term solutions are there? What can environmental technology do?
